WOMEN'S INVOLVEMENT ON THE ROAD TO COP32

The Road to COP32, set to be hosted by Ethiopia in 2027—marking the first time the UN Climate Change Conference is held in a Least Developed Country (LDC)—is heavily focused on ensuring women's leadership in climate policy, particularly in Africa and the Global South. This journey builds on the momentum from COP30 and COP31, aiming to transition from policy commitments to implementing gender-responsive, and equitable climate actions.

KEY ASPECTS OF COP32

  •      African Women's Leadership & Security: With COP32 scheduled for  Addis Ababa- Ethiopia, there is a strong focus on empowering African women and incorporating their, along with indigenous women's, perspectives into the center of climate justice discussions. This involves strengthening technical capacities for women in Africa and ensuring their voices drive, rather than just participate in, climate negotiations.
  •      The Gender-Climate-Health Nexus: Because 80% of people displaced by climate change are women, a core component of the road to COP32 is addressing the intersection of migration, health, and gender-based violence. Efforts are focused on creating safe, sustainable solutions that address the disproportionate impact of environmental disasters on women.
  •      Institutionalizing Gender in Policy: The UN is prioritizing the development of a new, more ambitious Gender Action Plan (GAP) to be implemented, aiming to turn past commitments into concrete, financed actions by COP30 and beyond. This includes using tools like the Gender Equality and Climate Policy Scorecard to monitor progress, as only a small fraction of current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) comprehensively address gender.
  •      Key Themes for COP32: The roadmap highlights critical areas, including the need for increased, direct climate finance for women, the promotion of gender-responsive technology, and the prioritization of women in green jobs and sustainable agriculture.
  •      Feminist Climate Justice Movement: A strong focus remains on grassroots, indigenous, and women-led movements that are pushing for a "feminist Just Transition," which involves shifting away from extractive industries toward economies that care for both people and the planet.

ANF’s goal is to ensure that by the time COP32 arrives in Addis Ababa, the climate agenda is truly transformative, ensuring gender equality is a core, and not peripheral, part of the global response to the climate crisis.
